Health Service Journal Value Awards 2019- Double Winners!

Winners of the 2019 HSJ Value Awards were announced on 23 May at Manchester Central where the Health Education England London sponsored Harrow Planning And Caring Together (PACT) with Care Home Residents Project won two awards for the ‘Training and Development Initiative of the Year and ‘Improving Value in the Care of Older Patients Award’.

Drs Asha Katwa, Chris Jenner (GPs) and Sulekha Ali (Nurse Care Home Facilitator) on behalf of the team (which also included nurse facilitators Marco Suadoni and Robin Christy) travelled up to this year’s ceremony which was a culmination of an awards process which seeks to recognise and celebrate outstanding improvement in care quality and efficiency by the NHS staff and organisations.

This year, the HSJ Value Awards garnered more than 530 entries, a third of which were shortlisted and judged by an expert panel who decided on the 20 winning entries.

Entrants demonstrated a commitment to outstanding practice as well as cutting-edge innovations. The judges were very impressed with the high standards of entries, testifying to the clear achievement the Harrow PACT Project team has made in being declared a winner for the team’s efforts in developing a 5-day last phase of life education programme in collaboration with the St Luke’s Hospice Care Home Support Service, embedding the practice of advance care planning for care home residents using Coordinate My Care and implementing the Sutton Homes of Care Vanguard Red bag hospital transfer scheme. The project is testament to what small scale initiatives and collaborative working between health and social care can achieve for a vulnerable cohort of the population.

Ben Clover, Bureau Chief, HSJ, said “Some of the entries shortlisted this year were not for treatment itself but for how that service is organised, to make it more efficient. Where would we be without dedicated people working to get value out of what taxpayers put into the NHS? Everyone knows how tight the money is out there now. But the HSJ Value Awards are not just won through belt-tightening, our winners secured this accolade for making an outstanding contribution to ensure that the system works better. Every efficiency, ground-breaking innovation and improvement add up the same thing – better patient care. Thanks to you and your colleagues, for your amazing efforts to support the NHS's drive to be the most efficient health system in the world."

What the judges said about the Training and Development of the year entry:

‘This vital piece of work helped patients and those who care for them. The well-developed programme encouraged technical competence and built confidence in staff. The initiative is scalable for partners working in other systems and brings important improvements to the quality and efficiency of care.’

What the judges said about the Improving Value in the Care of Older Adults entry:

‘The judges felt that this was an outstanding entry. A small team of individuals have clearly made a significant impact on the quality of advanced care planning. The golden thread of co-production is clearly visible, with the leads walking in the shoes of different stakeholders. There is potential for this project to be rolled out nationally.’

The team would like to thank everyone who supported this achievement, in particular the project team, steering group care home staff and residents.

Health Education England AWARD

‘Best Programme for Multi-Professional Team-based Learning in Primary and Community Care' 2016

The Challenges in End of Life Care Project received an award during the Health Education England North West London 2016 Awards for Excellence in Education and Training. This was in the category of:

‘Best Programme for Multi-Professional Team-based Learning in Primary and Community Care’.

This training focused on training health and social care staff end of life care.

Attendees at the programme commented:

‘This training was helpful for me as it coincided with me taking on regular ward rounds in 2 local care homes. One is a nursing home with some palliative care patients and high clinical needs. I have had the chance to apply my learning and try out things I have learned. I have supported staff, patients and families through at least 6 deaths in the last 8 months - and I think more effectively and confidently as a result of the sessions I attended.'

'I think the change in the pre and post study day measures are particularly gratifying as is the overall score. I, like Claire (Macmillan Nurse Consultant), very much enjoyed our joint collaboration. I thought the venue and the food was super - and very affirming of the work that the GPs do. It felt like a bit of a treat (and a retreat) from the pressures of the working day - and as such probably helped everyone to engage more in the content of the afternoon. Many thanks for including me on the programme.'

Dr Frances Goodhart, Psychologist

'Well organised. Relevant, very useful sessions. One of best training sessions I have been to - didn't mind giving up my Saturday for it- felt worthwhile'.
